Meadowbank

Bungalow renovation + extension

This major renovation and extension transformed a classic 1940s single-storey bungalow into a flexible, modern family home designed to meet the needs of a growing family. The original four-bedroom layout no longer met the family’s needs, so the goal was to create more space.

Location: Meadowbank
Project type: Bungalow renovation + extension
Architect: Chris Fox Architects
Interior Designer: Kate Crooks Design

Astute Build delivered a substantial two-storey rear extension that integrates modern architecture with the original bungalow. The upper level houses a private master suite, while the lower level includes an additional bedroom, bathroom and second living area, complemented by a new deck extending indoor-outdoor living from the existing kitchen. The sloping site required careful planning and sequencing of excavation and ground works, allowing the project to stay on programme and avoid cost blowouts.

A key success of the project was the seamless blending of old and new. Contemporary Colorsteel-style cladding provides contrast at the rear, while timber flooring, traditional bungalow-style doors, and classic hardware were used internally to maintain continuity with the original home. The result is a balanced, adaptable family home that respects its heritage while supporting modern family living.
