Point Chevalier
Renovation + extension
This project involved a significant renovation and rear extension to a 1940s bungalow, delivered during a time of widespread material supply challenges. The home sat toward the front of a gently sloping site, creating both opportunity and complexity when planning the expansion. Alongside the physical constraints of working with an existing character home, the project also needed to remain liveable, with the clients keen to stay in the house throughout the build while keeping the project within budget.
Location: Point Chevalier
Project type: Renovation + Extension
Architect: AM Architects
Interior Designer: Kate Crooks Design
Astute Build was engaged early to support preliminary design thinking and upfront costing, shaping the project from the outset. Working closely with the client, Astute Build introduced AM Architects to design a contemporary rear extension, with the build carefully staged to allow renovation of the existing bungalow alongside new construction. Original features such as panelled ceilings, traditional doors and trims were retained, while the new extension delivers open plan kitchen, dining and living spaces, a media room and garage, creating a light filled family hub that connects seamlessly to the outdoors.
Delivered in 2021, the project faced material supply challenges common at the time. Through careful planning, smart resource management and flexible staging, Astute Build delivered the project within budget while allowing the clients to remain living in the home throughout the build. The result is a considered family home that balances original character with contemporary living, achieved with minimal disruption.
