Te Atatu Peninsula
Bungalow renovation
+ extension
This full renovation and two-storey extension transformed a compact 1960s bungalow into a spacious, modern family home designed to support a growing young family. By extending upward rather than outward, the project maximised internal space while preserving valuable outdoor living areas.
Location: Te Atatu Peninsula
Project type: Bungalow renovation + extension
Architect: AM Architects
Astute Build delivered a two-storey addition to the side of the existing home, alongside a full interior rebuild to ensure a cohesive result throughout. The extension introduces additional bedrooms and bathrooms to both levels, while a striking central stairwell became a key architectural feature, incorporating powder-coated mesh balustrades and carefully positioned windows that bring natural light deep into the home. Two new decks were also added: a north-facing front deck to capture morning sun, and a rear deck designed for entertaining and family gatherings.
Modern detailing completes the transformation, including aluminium window shrouds that picture-frame key elevations, and engineered oak flooring was used throughout to unify old and new spaces. The result is a flexible, light-filled family home that balances smart design, functionality, and contemporary craftsmanship.
